Our Family: a Criminal Minds fanmix

1. Same Blood / The Academy Is....

With all the people we need to love and hate,
Everybody makes the same mistakes
Divided by these walls,
Together we are lost

We are the same blood
all of us. we are. we are
While half of us were lost
The other half forgot

[This song focuses on the team: they are the same blood; they are family. United by their jobs and lifestyles, they are always in it together.]

2. Yellow Brick Road / Angus & Julia Stone
Lost my heart in California, lost my mind
Shot me down with a revolver, blew my mind

And I lost my mind long ago,
Down that yellow brick road
I lost my mind long ago,
Down that yellow brick road.
[For me, this song has a great 'feel' to it that I always attribute to the team travelling between cases; in the back roads of rural towns or the city streets of busy towns. I think this song also highlights the way that each team member - at some point - feels like the job is getting to them, and when that happens, they turn to each other for support.]
3. No One's Gonna Love You / Band of Horses
No one's gonna love you more than I do

And anything to make you smile
It is my better side of you to admire
But someone
They should have warned you
When things start splitting at the seam and now
It's tumblin' down, hard.

[This captures how they are all good friends, making each other smile, but they're constantly concerned for one another; I particularly like the line 'someone should have warned you', which for me references the harshness of their jobs and what they face, which sometimes they feel unprepared for.]

4. Two of Us / The Beatles

You and me chasing paper
Getting nowhere
On our way back home
We're on our way home
We're on our way home
We're going home

[ Another journey-type song that really should be totally "the six of us" - they are so co-dependent and reliant on each other. Amidst the cases, they always manage to have some fun; creating memories, and the journey back home (this song) is always the best feeling, knowing they've helped people. ]

5. Stay Together for the Kids / Blink 182

Their anger hurts my ears
Been running strong for seven years
Rather than fix the problems, they never solve them
It makes no sense at all
I see them every day
We get along so why can't they?
If this is what he wants and this is what
she wants
Then why is there so much pain?

[ This song feels particularly relevant to the sixth season (spoilers for 6.24 start here) where Hotch and Garcia are both shown to be doubting their positions at the BAU. I feel like this song questions their strength as a family like that episode did, and everyone kind of wants everything to just run smoothly. ]

6. re: stacks / Bon Iver

This is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization
It's the sound of the unlocking and the lift away
Your love will be
Safe with me

[ I guess this song is more about the feel and the pacing, rather than the lyrics. It feels like the more tender moments the team have; it reminds me of the loyalty and love that they hold for each other through thick and thin. ]

7. Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet / Fall Out Boy

I will never end up like him
But behind my back, I already am

Oh darling, I know what you're going through

[ I really love the way this song pulls together love and sadness in a way that doesn't make you immediately recognise either, and I think the first line quoted above really reflects the mentally that each team member has and relies on one another to pull them out of: the lines between the UnSubs and themselves often blur. ]

8. Interlude: Harry & Ginny / Alexandre Desplat

I can't explain it, but this just reminds me of each time the team narrowly escapes capture/death/torture, and they hug and laugh it off. This to me reflects every moment the team have ever had with one another. This captures the quote perfectly.

9. Helplessness Blues / Fleet Foxes

I was raised up believing I was somehow unique
Like a snowflake distinct among snowflakes, unique in each way you can see
And now after some thinking, I'd say I'd rather be
A functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me

[ This is the ever-changing nature of their family and the greater purpose they often have to put before their own purposes. I think it also shows their loyalty to their jobs and, by extension, each other. ]

10. History / Funeral for a Friend

To see a friend bleed to death
What for, some kind of metaphor
That I can't see..
So I'll drink until I see it.

This sky will make me sick,
So I'll give up on you,
I'll give up on this.

[ I think the 'death' of Prentiss should have broken the team up, and it was only JJ/Hotch's secret that held it together, and they led by example. They knew she was out there, and therefore it didn't kill them the way it should have. But I think the others are broken underneath, and dealing with it in their own ways. This song captures those sick feelings of being alone and missing their family, and not knowing how to react now. ]

11. Manhattan / Kings of Leon

We're gonna hunt to kill, gonna skin the hide,
A yelp and a scream and away I ride,
And every drop that spills on every plot of the ground
It's all for you for what you found

[ Again, this is more about the way the vocals and music work together than the actual words; it feels like the reunion of the team and them just seizing the day on every case they take. ]

12. The Messenger / Linkin Park

When you feel you're alone
cut off from this cruel world
your instincts telling you to run

listen to your heart
those angel faces
they'll sing to you
they'll be your guide
back home where life leaves us blind
love keeps us kind
it keeps us kind.

when you suffered it all
and your spirit is breaking
you're growing desperate from the fight

Remember your loved
and you always will be
this melody will always bring
you right back home

[ This entire song is dedicated to each and every member of the BAU. I could write on essay on why this song is so beautiful for them, but I feel like each member has at some point felt this way; lost and confused and blind to the world, destroyed by the things they've seen and had to do. Their love for one another keeps them sane and normal and as well as can be. When they've fought all they can and are tired as hell, they just look beside them and see their family - the others - and remember why they do it; why they'll always do it. This to me is the essence of the BAU. ]

I'm also working on getting all these songs together in a zip, so bare with me.
